Hegemonic feminities is a set of practices and behaviors that is culturally constructed by a patriarchal system for females to conform too. These practices and behaviors expect females to be: passive submissive aggressive, maintain long hair, perform body hair removal, apply cosmetics, parenting, constraint on sexual activities, be thin, curvy, subordinate to men, dress modestly etc. Those females who deviate from these expected norms are faced with ridicule, unpleasant verbal slandering, violence, lack of male patronage, lack of intimacy, as well as other negative sanctionings. Females bodies and sexual activities are highly policed by men, other females and themselves to the point of depression because those who can not adhere to all the set standards are left feeling inadequate and unfeminine.
Hegemonic masculinities is a set of practices and behaviors that is culturally constructed by a heterosexual hegemonic patriarchy that says in order to be labelled a man you must conform or attain a certain status quo which entails: misogynist behaviors, promiscuity, athletic, aggressive, emotionless, and anything that is not associated with female attributes or behaviors. Those who deviate from the norm have their masculinity called into question and face ridicule, name calling, fights etc.
What is wrong with both of these constructs? And why must we conform to them. Why can't people enjoy who and what they want without being labelled or marginalized.
